unknown artist – Stereo Check Out [1960; Command]

Over the course of thirteen tracks, this stereo equipment test record provides a means for users to calibrate and stress-check their hardware, with steady tones, channel-flipping, modulation frequencies, and a few songs for general playback examination.  With extreme self-confidence (e.g., the early line “This is probably the most challenging record you’ll ever put on your turntable.”) and debonair enthusiasm for the material (most evident when explaining the instrumental make-up of “Hernando’s Hideaway”), the record and its narrator do their jobs with respectable style that rises above the stodgy nature of the content.
